👗 All clothes deserve a second story – here’s how to give it to them.

We’ve all had those days where we buy something on impulse, whether it be a cute top or a piece of merch we swear we will wear again, only for it to end up forgotten in the back of our closet. But our clothes don’t lose their value just because they fall out of our rotation. They carry memories and potential, we just need to provide them with a second story.
đź‘ Restyle Them
The most sustainable outfit is the one already found in your closet. Instead of saving your clothes for a special occasion, restyle them in ways that make them feel fresh again. Try layering your outfits differently, this could be a turtleneck under a summer dress or adding a belt to oversized pieces to create a new silhouette. You can also play around with accessories such as jewellery, belts, hats, etc. Sometimes the only difference between old and new is a different combination.
👯 Borrow, Swap, Share
Sustainability doesn’t have to be a solo effort. Clothing swaps are a fun way to refresh your wardrobe without spending money or contributing to waste. It can be as simple as swapping outfits with your roommates or doing a themed swap such as HOCO or vacation wear. For one off events consider borrowing or renting instead of buying something you will most likely only wear once.
✂️ Up-cycle What You Already Own
If you are tired of your clothes, consider transforming them into something you would wear. Crop or re-hem jeans and t-shirts, distress your denim, dye clothes for a fresh look or add patches and embroidery.
đź›’ Shop Second-Hand First
When you need something “new”, consider shopping at thrift or vintage shops, you never know what gems you might find and often at a fraction of the price too.
Some of our Kingston Favs:
Value Village – basics + denim
YGK Thrift
Depop – student styles
Facebook Marketplace – local swaps
🔄 Keep Clothes in Circulation
Once you’re done with a piece, it doesn’t have to become waste. Donation, consignment, and student swaps can help extend clothes lifespan long after they have made their way out of your rotation. You can also list your clothes on Facebook marketplace and Depop (see our article on how to list like a pro!). This helps clothes stay in rotation, out of landfills, and help prevent unnecessary overconsumption. You can also consider joining our clothing sale event (date tbd just keep your eyes on our social pages for details).
